Keeping a healthy smile all year round: Get into the habit of proper dental hygiene

Bleeding gums and sensitive teeth are my greatest dilemma since having a baby! Why? Our body changes during pregnancy, and after childbirth, your teeth are not an exception! Our body produces high levels of the hormone progesterone during pregnancy and this creates more acid in the mouth, which can lead to gingivitis. Some of the symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed during brushing or flossing. To add more, this dental problems won't go away after giving birth. BELIEVE ME! Breastfeeding moms are not an exception. We are also prone to tooth decay if we don't hydrate and brush religiously. So in the spirit of #SelfLove for the year 2020, let's create a new habit!

As I kick off a brand-new year, I start to list down resolutions to jumpstart good habits that I wish to form and continue for the rest of the year.

They say it only takes 2 weeks to create a habit, so why not start off with the easiest resolution to keep: the habit of a proper dental hygiene?

Building on the habit of good dental hygiene only takes a few minutes per day, but somehow, this doesn’t get the attention and commitment it deserves. To mindfully get into this habit, every household should begin by understanding our natural eating habits, as most of the food and drinks that we consume daily are generally either acidic or pigmented. Think of oranges, coffee, pasta, ketchup, wine, and so on.

Acid in food and drinks softens the tooth enamel or the outer layer of the tooth. Weakened tooth enamel may lead to dental erosion that makes our teeth prone to sensitivity. More so, acid also promotes bacterial growth, which causes problems ranging from bleeding gums to gingivitis.

My final thoughts?
